WHAT IS BAPTISM?

Ultimately, Baptism is an outward action that symbolized a believer's new life in Jesus. It's an important & powerful 1st step of obedience to the commands of God, and declares to the world that you love, trust & have put your hope in Jesus.

Baptism illustrates a couple of things:

1. The burial & resurrection of Jesus

  • "For when you were baptized, you were buried with Christ, and in baptism you were also raised with Christ through your faith in the active power of God, who raised him from death." -Colossians 2:12

2. My new life as a follower of Jesus

  • "When someone becomes a Christian he becomes a brand new person inside. The old life has passed away and a new life has begun!" -2 Corinthians 5:17

Does Baptism make me a Christian?

Baptism doesn’t MAKE you a believer in Jesus - it SHOWS that you already believe.

It doesn't "save" you, only faith in Jesus can save you.

  • "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith … it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast." -Ephesians 2:8-9

Baptism is like a wedding ring – it's the outward symbol of an inward (heart) commitment.

Can children be baptized?

Yes, but at Refuge, we wait until children have the ability to believe and understand the true meaning of baptism before we baptize them.

If you were baptized as an infant, it was the intent of your parents that you would one day be a follower of Jesus. Your baptism as an adult can be viewed as the fulfillment of your parents’ wishes. It in no way negates the baptism you received as a child.

Who should be baptized?

Every person who believes in Jesus!

"Those who believe and accepted His message were baptized…" -Acts 2:41
